Facial fillers

Fillers are the treatment we are all so grateful for so we can age in style.

A filler treatment is designed to either enhance and emphasise your features in a natural way, or to restore volume that is slowly lost over time.

For example, we can enhance the chin or nose to create a more balanced profile, emphasise the cheeks which are among the first to lose volume and rejuvenate the skin.

Fillers Jaw lines

A well-defined jawline has always been considered beautiful and in the past only available to people with the genes for it. A classic example that everyone knows is Angelina Jolie's beautiful jaw. The jawline starts at the angles of the jaw and extends all the way to the chin. With the help of fillers at Dr Nina in Gothenburg, we can now define and create balance in this area regardless of the starting point.

Fillers is a collective name for a volumising injection treatment based on hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is found naturally in our skin, and is what binds moisture and gives a youthful appearance.

As we age, our skin loses not only collagen but also hyaluronic acid. This leads to sagging skin and a loss of 'glow'.

As hyaluronic acid is naturally present in our body, the body recognises it and also breaks it down. The treatment is therefore not permanent.

However, it will last longer and longer the more times you treat an area. How long it lasts exactly is individual and depends a bit on your metabolism. Normal shelf life is anywhere from a few months to 1-2 years.

The most sensitive area of the face to treat is the lips, because so many nerves run there. For the other areas, there is a small amount of 'dental anaesthetic' (lidocaine) inside the syringe, which usually numbs the area being treated.

Results are visible immediately after treatment. However, we usually say that the final result is achieved after 2 weeks. By this time, the hyaluronic acid has integrated well into the skin and all swelling is gone.

Yes, it is perfectly ok to go back to work after the treatment or the day after.

The most common side effect of a filler treatment is a slight and temporary swelling in the area being treated. Bruising may also occur but can be easily concealed with a little make-up.

The treated area may be sore for a few days after treatment, and is nothing to worry about.

Less common complications can include infection at the injection site, so good aftercare is important.

Yes, hyaluronic acid based fillers can be removed. Then we use hyalase which breaks down most of the filler in 24 hours and your appearance is restored to before treatment.

In the past, silicone-based fillers were often used which were/are permanent. We do not recommend treatment with these, as they often migrate outside the treated area over time.

This is due to both the law of gravity, as well as the fact that the structure of the skin changes with ageing.

Silicone-based fillers do not integrate into the skin in the same way as hyaluronic acid (as it is not naturally occurring), and can form hard lumps.

If there are any complications, these cannot be broken down and surgery is needed to remove the material.
