What are polynucleotides?

Does K beauty make you think of snail slime and other unusual ingredients? Polynucleotides take skincare one step further. Sometimes called a ”salmon sperm facial”, the treatment uses chains of nucleotides, the building blocks of DNA, to stimulate the skin's natural renewal and repair.

The treatment utilises polynucleotides from wild salmon, whose DNA is remarkably similar to that of humans. This similarity allows the substances to integrate smoothly with our skin cells and activate the body's own repair mechanisms. The method acts as a skin booster, awakening the skin's own processes rather than just topping up.

Treatment with Rejuran Healer and Ameela at NYO

There are several brands that manufacture products for injections and we carefully select the best options on the market. At NYO, we work with both Rejuran Healer, which comes in several different flavours, and Ameela, which offers a higher concentration of polynucleotides.

These products can be used on the forehead, temples, face, neck, décolleté and hands. The technique is called micropapular and involves many small superficial injections distributed evenly over the treatment area to maximise skin nourishment and stimulate repair.

Do I need Rejuran Healer or Ameela?

The choice of product is guided by the condition of the skin and what is to be treated. Stronger concentrations of polynucleotides are mainly used in the correction of acne scars, such as ick pick scars and other types of scar tissue, where the method has shown good results. It is also an excellent treatment for fine lines, with a particularly good effect on the delicate area around the eyes.

Key facts about polynucleotides

  • Function: Acts as a skin booster that stimulates the skin's own repair processes, rather than just filling in.
  • Uses: Most common around the eyes (where the skin is thin), but also face, neck and décolleté, and scars.
  • Effects: Increased moisture, improved elasticity, firmer skin and reduced inflammation.
  • Course of treatment: Usually a course of 2 to 3 sessions is required every few weeks.
  • Side effects: Redness, swelling and bruising may occur, but they usually disappear quickly. Should be avoided in case of fish allergy.

How the treatment works

Before treatment, you may be asked to abstain from medication that may affect blood clotting. Before your visit, you will receive all the information you need from us at the NYO to put you at ease throughout the process.

Using a thin needle, the polynucleotides are then placed just under the skin in the treatment area. The procedure involves many small pricks about one centimetre apart. As the treatment involves several pricks, it can be quite painful. We therefore recommend that you come to the clinic about 30 minutes before your booked appointment to receive the anaesthetic. This way the treatment will be as comfortable as possible.

One syringe usually contains 2 ml, which is usually enough to treat about one third of the face. Polynucleotides have a clear dose-response relationship, meaning that a higher dose will have a more powerful and noticeable effect on skin quality. Therefore, for a so-called ”full face” treatment, which includes the whole face and the area under the eyes, we usually use 6-7 ml to achieve optimal results.

After treatment

After treatment, you may want to avoid the sun, but you can return to your usual activities straight away afterwards. Small elevations, known as papules, may be visible at the injection sites but usually disappear within 24 hours once the product is absorbed. As with all injections, there is a small risk of bruising or slight swelling. Avoid strenuous exercise, saunas and hot baths for the first 24 hours.

Expected results and cure

For the best results, we recommend 2 to 3 treatments about 4 to 6 weeks apart. The results will come gradually as the skin builds itself up. Thereafter, it is beneficial to maintain the treatment once a year. It does not need to be done in a cure, but single visits are usually enough.

Combination with other treatments

Polynucleotides work well in combination with other procedures. Using them together with Sylfirm X (RF microneedling), for example, provides a powerful synergy where the skin gets the building blocks it needs for healing and tightening. It can also be used together with fillers to work on both volume and skin quality at the same time.
