What are exosomes?

It could be said that exosomes are small, bubble-like particles that occur naturally in the body and act as messengers between cells. They can transport various signalling molecules that influence how cells communicate and function.

In the field of regenerative medicine, research is being carried out into the potential of exosomes to support, amongst other things, cell renewal and healing. This is why they have also attracted interest in treatments for the hair and scalp.

How does exosome treatment for hair work?

Here at Dr. Nina, the treatment begins with a blood sample taken from a vein in the arm. The blood is then filtered to extract plasma containing exosomes, which is subsequently injected into the scalp.

The idea is that the exosomes will deliver biological signals to the area around the hair follicles and create an environment that can support the function of the hair follicles and hair growth.

What results can you expect?

Hair grows slowly, so results are not immediate. Changes may start to become noticeable after around 6–12 weeks and continue to develop over the following months. Results vary from person to person and are influenced by factors such as the cause of the hair loss and the condition of the hair.

Exosomes may be an option for those experiencing hair loss or thinning hair who wish to support the function of their hair follicles, as the treatment stimulates hair growth and improves hair quality in the long term.

How does the treatment work?

A treatment session lasts around 60 minutes and consists of the following steps:

A blood sample is taken from a vein in the arm.

The blood is processed and the exosomes are extracted.

Approximately 6–8 ml of plasma containing exosomes can usually be extracted.

The material is then injected into the scalp in the areas to be treated.

The treatment is, of course, tailored to the individual condition of the hair and scalp, and may therefore vary slightly.

Exosomes or PRP – what is the difference?

PRP and exosome therapy differ both in how the material is produced and in what the treatment contains.

In PRP treatment, a blood sample is taken from the patient. The blood is centrifuged to separate out a plasma component with a higher concentration of platelets, which is then applied to the area to be treated.

Exosome therapy using platelet- or PRP-derived exosomes requires a more advanced process. The exosomes are isolated and concentrated from a biological sample, such as PRP, to produce small extracellular vesicles that act as messengers between cells.

Both methods are used in regenerative medicine, but exosome therapy is a newer form of treatment that has not yet been fully standardised. Research into its use for hair loss is still limited and is ongoing.

Who is exosome therapy suitable for?

Exosomes for hair may be suitable for people experiencing hair loss, thinning hair or who wish to support hair growth. However, the treatment is not suitable for all types of hair loss.

An individual assessment is therefore important in order to identify the cause of hair loss and determine whether exosome treatment is appropriate.

After treatment and recovery

It is worth noting that the scalp may be slightly red, swollen or tender after the injections. These symptoms are usually temporary and the recovery time is short.

Exosomes for hair and other therapeutic areas

Exosomes can, in fact, also be used for skin treatments. At Dr. Nina, plasma-derived exosomes are used, amongst other things, to support the skin’s cell renewal and collagen production.
